Why Install a Drip Irrigation System?

Written by chesterpaul07

One of the main conditions for obtaining a good harvest is timely and regular moistening of the soil. The drip irrigation system copes with this task perfectly. It works simply, but at the same time brilliantly: through special perforated hoses, water in the right quantities is delivered directly to the root system without your participation.

The system solves several problems at once: it saves water, works even with a small pressure in the water supply system, delivers water directly to the roots of plants, delivers the optimal amount of moisture, does not erode the fertile layer, reduces the flow of water and fertilizer solutions below the root zone, increases productivity. In addition, thanks to spot irrigation, the number of weeds is reduced: they simply do not have enough moisture to grow.

The system works even at low pressure. For sprinklers, sprinklers and watering from a hose, a pressure in the water supply of at least 1.5–2 Atm is necessary, and for the operation of droppers, 1 Atm or less. That is, the drip irrigation system is well suited for those who can not provide sufficient water pressure for other irrigation systems

How to mount and install

Special hoses with droppers or holes are connected to the main pipe, which comes from the water supply or well. If you do not have one watering zone, but several, you need to connect the hoses to the auxiliary lines.

I recommend that between the water supply and the main pipe put a storage tank, slightly raised above the ground – about one to two meters. This will create additional pressure in the pipes. It is also important that in this tank the water will warm up to a comfortable temperature for irrigation.

The main line is connected to the water supply system through an external tap, which can be used to manually control the water supply. There is the possibility of automatic control. To do this, you need to install a controller with which you can configure daily irrigation at a certain time, adjust the water pressure and flow rate. If the pressure in the water supply is too strong, you will also have to purchase a pressure regulator.

You can install a drip irrigation system yourself

Drip irrigation hoses are provided with droppers of small diameters. To prevent them from clogging with insoluble particles of garbage, you need to install filters that match the type of droppers and the quality of the water. In addition, you need to know the type of soil on the site. The layout of the line also depends on this – the number of droppers and the distance between them. Sandy soil, for example, requires close proximity to the holes on the hose, as water quickly seeps into the soil. On loamy soils, the water stays in the upper layer longer, so on the contrary, you can increase the distance between the droppers.

To connect all components, it is necessary to purchase angle fittings and tees of john guest fittings for connecting watering hoses to the trunk, for their branching, turning; start connectors for connecting a drip tape to a plastic water pipe; plugs for the ends of the main pipe and drip tape or hose. It is best to use fittings made of high-quality polyethylene, however, as well as a storage tank, since the metal rusts and clogs the water.
