Occupations in the chemical manufacturing industry

Approximately 53% of employees are engaged in occupations such as production, installation, maintenance and repair. The other 12% are in professional and related occupations. Another 11% are in office and administrative support occupations, and 10% are in management, business and finance occupations.

Occupation of production. Workers in the chemical production industry operate and fix factory machinery, transport raw materials, and monitor the production process. Advances in technology have gradually improved the level of factory automation and reduced the number of production positions. The chemical plant and system operators monitor the entire production process. The operator is responsible for the efficient operation of the chemical plant. Chemical plant operators are usually promoted to these positions only after they have gained extensive chemical production experience and technical training. Experienced operators are sometimes promoted to senior management positions.

Industrial mechanical mechanics and mechanical maintenance workers make precision industrial machinery run smoothly. They usually repair equipment, install machinery, or perform preventive maintenance in the factory. Workers get these jobs through apprenticeships, formal vocational training, or completion of internal training courses.

Inspectors, testers, sorters, samplers and weighers ensure that the production process runs effectively and that the products meet quality standards. They submit the problem to the factory operator or manager. A high school diploma is sufficient for basic product testing. Complex precision inspection positions are held by people with experience and knowledge of products and production processes in the chemical manufacturing industry.

Packing and filling machine operators and bidders pack products and box them, and prepare the final product for shipment or sale to wholesalers or consumers. More than half of the jobs are in the soap and cosmetics industry, because consumer products in this industry require a lot of packaging. A high school diploma and short-term on-the-job training are the most common levels of education and training for this profession.

Transportation and material transportation workers use industrial trucks to transport materials around the factory or deliver finished products to customers. For these jobs, employers look for experienced workers with knowledge of chemical hazards, safety procedures, and hazardous chemical transportation regulations. Learning to operate an industrial truck or tractor can be completed through on-the-job training, but usually requires truck driving experience and a commercial driver’s license to operate a tractor loaded with chemicals. Some jobs in transportation and material transportation are open to inexperienced workers. These workers transport raw materials and finished products through chemical plants, and assist motor vehicle operators in loading and unloading raw materials and chemicals. They learn how to handle chemicals safely at work and develop skills to enable them to advance to other occupations.
